Day 32 - Trencianske Teplice

Monday 27 June The bus ride from Zakopane to Poprad through the Tatra mountains was on winding roads, in drizzelling rain, mist and fog. It was pretty difficult to take photos, but the first couple show some of the landscape.

From there it was a three-hour train trip through rolling countryside to Trencianska Tepla (near Trencin), and a short taxi ride to the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice.

We arrived at Penzione Venezia in the late afternoon. The people were very friendly, spoke Slovakian, Russian and German only – no English. The room was great, overlooking the canal and park, and very peaceful.

On our late afternoon walk through town, Frances saw a sign for Kofola on tap at a Viniteka (wine bar) so we stopped for refreshment. Kofola is a local cola drink, similar to Chinotto but not so sweet. I had a glass of Merlot Rose which was on tap! Not bad though. They also had some liquor in pretty interesting hand painted bottles.

We then looked for a place to eat, but we’d started a bit late, and half of the restaurants we’d passed earlier had since closed. Not too hungry we settled on a Okopia, a pizza restaurant.

We ordered a Rukola pizza to share, cheese, fresh tomato, prosciutto and rocket. When the waitress arrived, she placed half a pizza on the table – for a moment I though she’d understood that we wanted half a pizza instead of one pizza for two people. Then she put the other half on the table, on another plate! The first time we’ve got a share pizza on two plates – can’t criticize the service.

We also ordered dry white and red wines which came exactly as we ordered. The red was particularly good.
