Day 49 - Mohacs, Kalocsa

Thursday 14 July: Mohacs to Kalocsa.

It rained overnight, and the temperature thankfully dropped from 38C to 17C during the night.

In the morning we arrived at Mohacs (Mohach), Hungary, for customs and passport control and drop some passengers going on an excursion.

We only had an hour to go ashore and explore. It’s a small but nice town with lots of trees for shade – in contrast to the towns yesterday which had very little of either.

It has a 900 year history because of its position in southern Hungary on the Danube.

The town square was dominated by the Votive Memorial Church with its stark exterior and strange metallic sculpture of a crass and knight adjacent to it.

In these brief stops where language is a problem, it’s often difficult to determine what we are seeing, or its purpose.

There was another curious sculpture of a figure with a pig-like head or headdress in a park.

In the afternoon we stopped briefly at the port of Kalocsa, to pick up passengers after their excursion. We only had half an hour, not long enough for Frances to have a dip in the Danube, but long enough for some shopping at a small store.

Fortunately they accepted Euros, so we bought some essential supplies.
